Kyle Johnston

Kyle is married to Kirsty and they have three delightful daughters and a slightly odd miniature dachshund. Kyle grew up in Cape Town, and really enjoys living in this special city. He likes good food, music, and chill time with family and friends. He can be a bit of a nerd and loves getting into a good book. Most of all, he loves knowing Jesus and helping others to know him better. Kyle is convinced that the Bible communicates the most surprising, wonderful and beautiful message we could ever hear.

This Cross Word, Kyle will take us through the New Testament letter of 1 Corinthians. As we look at this letter, we’ll consider what it means to be truly spiritual, and we will be amazed by God’s grace. We will see how the gospel meets us in the middle of our messy lives and shows us how Jesus brings renewal and hope.

Chris Ebden

Chris is married to Carmen, and they have three precious boys between the ages of 5 and 10. Chris was born in Durban, and moved to Cape Town at 11 years old. He currently serves as a Pastor at a REACH-SA Church called St Johns in Bothasig.

He enjoys holidays at the beach with his family, cheering his kids on playing soccer, cricket, and rugby, which he sometimes still tries to play himself. And his greatest moments were as a professional golfer, ninja, and navy seal, conquering the world on his Xbox. He has a story to tell of God’s undeserved grace in his life, realised in his high school years how much he needs Jesus, and loves to share his story one on one with others who also find figuring life out hard.  

On Cross Word, Chris will introduce us briefly to the Bible book of Ecclesiastes, which he was surprised to find helped him understand some of his own struggles with feeling life to be meaningless, and how it pointed him to the only One who helped him make sense of it.

Glenn Lyons

Glenn was born and grew up in Cape Town. His family background is a rich mix of both Scottish and Jewish heritage. Glenn came to Christ along with his fiance Sandy in 1993 while attending pre-marriage classes at St James Church Kenilworth. Glenn has served as the Presiding Bishop of REACH-SA since 2015 and recently joined Tokai Community Church as Rector.

Glenn was a pilot and paramedic but nowadays enjoys more relaxed activities like exploring old bookshops and taking long walks. He also enjoys the occasional hack through the local golf course. Glenn and Sandy have two children, Jesse and Joe.

“Grow up!” That’s something we hear a lot from adults when we are young. But even many adults dont know what being grown up really is.  Glenn will be teaching us, from 1 Corinthians, just what it means to be grown up in Jesus and in this world.

Gerard Jampies

Gerard, originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, has called Cape Town home for over a decade. He began his career as a personal trainer and exercise specialist in the fitness industry before reading Theology at George Whitefield College. Gerard is the assistant and student pastor at the Message Church and works alongside Reach Students at UCT, where we want students to thrive emotionally, academically, and spiritually.

Gerard is married to Lulu, and they have two young children. In his free time, he enjoys catching waves, pumping the cadence high, and passionately supporting Manchester United.

At Cross Word this year, Gerard will lead us as we delve into what it means to be “saved by the Lord”, exploring the Biblical concepts of Atonement, Justification, Adoption, and Sanctification.
